Why Am I like this?

Produced by STEMedia, “Why Am I Like This?” was a show created by PBS Digital Studios for their science YouTube channel, Terra. This eight-episode digital series was funded by the National Science Foundation to reach female and marginalized communities. This evolutionary biology show experimented with the format by explaining science through sketch comedy and breaking the fourth wall.

This was my first gig out of graduate school!
I had the opportunity to play many roles in this show, ultimately landing me as the show’s
showrunner.

The second episode of the series, “Where Does My Skin Color Come From?” won a Bronze Telly Award in 2023, in which I produced, co-wrote, and directed.

Hungry planet

Hungry Planet showcases how scientists and communities are working to keep food on our plates for generations to come.

This six-episode food science show is hosted on PBS Digital Studio’s YouTube channel ‘Terra’ and was funded by the National Science Foundation to reach female, Latino, and Black audiences.

In each episode, friend and host Niba (a plant scientist) chats with scientists about how we use science to grow staple foods in extreme climates, enhance flavor, and fight diseases, and community members about the work they do to ensure equitable access to food.

Hungry Planet is a show created by Alex Dainis of Helicase Media and co-produced with STEMedia. Alex and I were 2019 Jackson Wild Media Fellows and became close friends through that experience. It was a great pleasure to work alongside her, as our skill sets complimented each other.

Galactic polymath

Galactic Polymath is an education studio that transforms current scientific research into creative, interdisciplinary lessons for grades 5+ that are free for everyone.

I met founder Matt Wilkins at Vanderbilt, where he was completing his post-doc at the Collaborative for STEM Education and Outreach. Our interests overlapped as we saw the lack of current research, representation, and resources for students to engage with science.

I partnered with GP as a multi-media producer, where I developed most of the videos that supplement students’ learning in the curriculum.

Working with GP brings me joy as I exercise creativity, grow my motion graphics skills, and produce work that sparks critical thinking and curiosity.

Kiwico’s

innovators of awesome

I got to host a kids game show!

KiwiCo and Conscious Minds worked together to translate KiwiCo’s mission into a four-part game show where kids work together to solve problems using the crate’s tools. Facing increasingly complex creative challenges and alternatively working in tandem or against each other, “Innovators of Awesome” removes all the Hollywood magic; the real magic is watching these kid competitors using the skills and tools needed to invent a future of their design.

I spent a week in California, where I toured KiwiCo’s headquarters to learn about their mission of engaging young minds in STEM through enriching, purposeful play to life with hands-on, kid-tested products and activities.” Then, I spent four days on a sound stage, watching three wholesome kids tinker their way to the prize.

It was a great experience working with a larger organization and learning how productions work at a larger scale.

Science magazine

About the size of Pluto, Earth’s inner core is made of solid iron and helps power the magnetic field that protects life from harmful space radiation. For over a century, seismic waves have helped researchers identify and characterize the core’s properties. Science reporter Paul Voosen wrote about the most recent insights into the mysterious center of the planet.

Science Magazine approached me to produce this 5-minute video where I narrated, did motion graphics, audio mixed and mastered, and sound designed.

Vanderbilt

I provided full-service production for the Institute of Software Integrated Systems.

I produced introductory videos for their outreach work,
celebrate the institute’s 25th anniversary, and communicate their research to attract funders.

For the video shown on the left, I helped the professor identify their target audience, guided them in understanding how to communicate their research to attract potential stakeholders, and even designed a logo for their startup.
