AAAS SciMic Stage
I got the honor to host the SciMic Stage at the 2025 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.
Because of my affiliation with AAAS as a 2021 Mass Media Fellow, I was invited to be a panelist for the session “How the Media Covers Science Stories” with NPR’s Joe Palca and Atmos’ Jason Dinh.
After I was selected as a panelist, the AAAS team learned about my hosting capabilities and offered me the gig to host the SciMic Stage. This was essentially a live podcast to tease the diverse talks being presented at the meeting.
I interviewed 13 scientists for 15-30 minutes to an online and live audience, covering topics such as Science Breakthroughs, Policy, Communication, Physics, Education, Healthcare, and Environmental Science.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Mass Media Fellowship
Joe, Jason, and I discussed:
Our MMF experience and how it affected our careers.
How we find ideas for stories and develop them for news outlets.
Tips for making science approachable for the general reader, viewer, or listener.
The kinds of feedback we get from our audience.
How do we determine whether we are reaching the people we want to reach.
And finally, what the differences between science journalism and science communication.
It was a very fruitful conversation learning from Joe and Jason, in addition to learning SO much from all the scientists I got to interview on the stage.
