ComSciCon-Atlanta:

A science communication workshop for
graduate students by graduate students

I was 1 of 50 students selected to attend the inaugural meeting in 2018. ComSciCon—Atlanta opened my world to science communication and doing SciComm as a career. I enjoyed the experience so much, I went on to organize the 2019 and 2020 meetings.

In 2019, I helped raise $25,000 in funding to cover workshop expenses so attendees could participate for free.

In 2020, I stepped up to co-chair the third annual meeting. Together we raised $20,000 in funding to cover workshop expenses.

We also successfully converted the meeting to a hybrid event before the country locked down.

Workshops I helped organize included:

  • Panels on the Ethics of SciComm, Data Representation, SciComm Audiences, Policy & Advocacy, and Public Outreach

  • Breakout Sessions on Storytelling, Pitching Stories, Social Media Branding, Messaging, Video Making, SciComm Online, and Data Visualization

  • Write-a-thons where students workshopped written, audio, or visual news stories reviewed by peers and writing experts.

In addition to fundraising and event planning,
I designed logos, reports, and itineraries
